CHEM& 161: General Chemistry with Lab I 5 Cr Quarters: F, W The first quarter of a three-quarter sequence in general chemistry with lab for science and engineering majors. The topics include significant figures and measurements, seminal experiments elucidating atomic structure, the electromagnetic spectrum, the wave nature of matter, quantum topics, chemical bonding and nomenclature, the three-dimensional structure of matter, hybridization, molecular orbital theory, reaction types, and stoichiometry. The lab topics include laboratory safety, measurement, conservation of mass, the Bohr model of the atom, Beer’s Law, Lewis structures, limiting reactants, conductivity, and quantitative and qualitative analysis. Prerequisite: CHEM& 139 or one year of high school chemistry and concurrent enrollment in MATH 095 or placement into MATH& 141 or higher. Distribution for DTA: Natural Sciences - Lab
